Making flowers last longer
A little extra care can make a big difference
for any size flower arrangement or fresh flower bouquet
- The vase or container that holds the
flowers must be very clean
.-
Keep the vase filled (or floral foam soaked) with water.
- Submerged leaves will rot and create
bacteria in the water, therefore remove all leaves that will be under water
in the vase
- It makes a difference to add cut flower
food to the vase of water. It is
important to follow the mixing directions on the flower food packet. Flower
foods should not be diluted with more water than is specified on the packet
- Every three to four days replace the old
vase water with fresh water and cut flower food.
- Re-cut stems by removing one to two inches
with a sharp knife. Be sure to use a sharp knife or clippers that will not
crush the stems. Immediately place the stems into solution.
- Placing your flowers over a radiator, or in a
draught or in full sun will cause excess water loss from the flowers and they
will wilt very quickly.
- For maximum life, put your flower arrangement in a cool
room
- Most flowers should be picked when they
are in bud or half open, but picked too tightly and they may never open
- Don't place your finished arrangement in full sun, over a

Selecting Flowers
Selecting fresh flowers may extend the life of your bouquet or
floral arrangement for a couple of extra days.
- When picking the flower make sure the petals are firm and
upright.
- Leaves that are drooping, yellow or spotted are signs of
age
- Flowers with wooden stem can look droopy. In this case
cut the stem with sharp pruning shears and place them in a warm water
solution with fresh flower food to promote flower opening.
